Bayou Country.

Ben woke up and emerged from the cramped space in the hollow log where he’d spent the night. He felt a pull in the opposite direction of the way he’d been wandering the night before and wondered if he was farther away from Rowanne instead of closer.

Am I going the wrong way?

He ran back the way he’d come, and after running at top speed for half an hour, Ben recognized his surroundings. Familiar with this part of the bayou, happiness surged through him. He ran even faster as he headed for home.

Running up from the riverbank, Ben got to the house at the same time Rowanne pulled into the driveway. He shifted as soon as he saw her, his heart pounding with love and joy.

Rowanne hopped out of the car and ran towards him with Nixa on her heels, barking, and yelping. Tears rolled down her cheeks as Ben held her in his arms and kissed her.

“Don’t cry, Rowanne. I was lost, but then this morning, I knew the way home.”

“I think Misty helped you.”

“Thanks, Misty,” said Ben. He squatted down and patted Nixa on her head. “I’m hungry.”

“I’ll cook breakfast and call Uncle Luke,” said Rowanne. “Then we’ll drive to N’Orlean. Casey is coming home today.”

Ben’s face lit up as they walked into the kitchen. “I like Casey.”
